THIS was my wake-up call moment for my Autistic daughter

Maybe you can relate to this, too. I’m sure you can. This was the moment I had a wake-up call for my Autistic daughter.

I used every single excuse in the book to justify her behaviors before my daughter was diagnosed with Autism.

Whenever she was “playing with toys”, she was really just spinning them around in her hands, I justified it as she’s figuring it out.

In moments when she acts disengaged from her brother or other kids like her cousins, I just said she was marching to the beat of her own drum.

When it came to her speech and the obvious regression that was happening, I kept telling myself she’ll talk when she’s ready.

Whenever family members pressured me to go to the doctor to get her checked out I still had every excuse in the book that she was fine and it was all in their head.

Until the Dr said this:  Is she saying 20 words with intent?

It felt like taking a sucker punch right to the gut.

That was my wake-the-fuck-up-Michelle moment.

This was my wake-up call moment for my autistic daughter.

It was the moment that everything got real. My denial became my reality.

With this reality, I got to work.

The work I did for my daughter getting her from nonverbal at 2 years old to a thriving 9-year-old in an integrated classroom with typical peers is WHY I do this work for my clients, too.

This did happen to my daughter. This did happen to my family.

This happened, yes. I may not like it whenever I get a reminder of her Autism, even now.

But I know that wake-up call was my wake-up call to my daughter and to my life’s mission to help parents like you feel certain they can change the future for their child.
