When I was potty training my daughter, I was absolutely OUT OF MY MIND.
She was non-verbal on the Autism spectrum and in preschool at the time.
One day I saw one kid in her preschool class that was potty trained and that triggered me to say..
SHE MUST BE POTTY TRAINED NOW!!
Julianna had shown ZERO signs that she was ready to potty train or that she was remotely interested in the potty.
AND…I ignored the teachers and therapists saying she wasn’t ready and I was full steam ahead.
…BUT WE BOTH FELL FLAT ON OUR FACES.
Accidents everywhere… and after WEEKS of a literal shit show of potty training…
I thought she was NEVER going to learn and would be in Diapers for Life 🙁
I felt like a FAILURE of a mother
I couldn’t do it.
So I called ….MY MOM.
I told her I was trying to Potty Train and it was going very bad, and can she take over while I take a work call. When I am came out I was stunned…
My mom, she reacted SO differently.
She DIDN’T LOSE her mind.
She had this EASE about her, this different energy.
She EXPECTED accidents. Even anticipated them.
AND she opened my eyes to realize that I was the one who was putting so much pressure on myself and Julianna to do it “right”. To do it “perfectly”.
She allowed me to see that it’s not a big deal and…
MESSES ARE PART OF THE PROCESS
I HAD TO BE OK WITH IT.
And Julianna my non verbal autistic child was potty trained very shortly there after.
And now 6 years later I’ve been coined as the Autism Potty Guru.
I have potty trained Autistic toddlers, teens and adults.
I have potty trained non verbal, aggressive, hyperactive children.
I have a 100% success rate.
Because “training to potty perfection” will always leave you feeling defeated.
